FAQs

What does your name mean?
It basically sums up our whole approach: if there’s a difficult way, we’ll take it, and make it work. Not just for the sake of it, but because breaking new ground is what excites us.

The work you make, it’s not really theatre is it?
Yes and no. It’s not theatre in the sense that you sit in a darkened auditorium looking
forward to your interval ice cream/gin and tonic. But it is theatre because it’s about creating
live events, where a performer and observer are present, it’s just not always clear who is who.

Was Homing Instinct your first show?
Homing Instinct was the first of our audience interactive performances, which shaped, and was inspired by, our current artistic aims. Before Homing Instinct, the company made two shows based on historical material,
which helped to define what we wanted to make in the future:

Banishing the Beast, a play devised by the company.
Explored the world of Melodrama, questioning the role of the heroine within it. A devised show with a feminist and educational slant.

Divine, a new play by Rachel Yarsley.
Uncovered the early life of the theatre legend Sarah Bernhardt. New Writing developed in the context of workshops and rehearsal.
