I’ve just received my accreditation, and am now very happy to be an Accredited Action Learning Facilitator.

I experienced Action Learning as a ‘set’ member whilst I was undertaking my Cultural Leadership Programme Placement last year. This led me to apply for and be accepted onto the Action Learning and Leadership Facilitation Skills course run by the Action Learning Associates and the Cultural Leadership Programme early this year.

I’m really interested in using the skills I’ve gained to support my current facilitation roles, and also find opportunities to use them in a ‘pure’ Action Learning context. The Action Learning Associates Website has some useful info about what Action Learning is, if you’d like to find out more about it.

The Other Way Works is pleased to announce a new development with long-lasting positive consequences for the career of our Artistic Director, Katie Day and for the future growth of the Company.

Katie will spend the coming year as Associate Producer at Watershed, Bristol, running a new programme called ‘Theatre Sandbox’. This is not just another job, however! She is undertaking this role as part of a Cultural Leadership Programme Peach Placement. This prestigious programme (with only eight positions UK-wide) will enable Katie to develop her leadership skills through an intensive practical placement, targeted development and training, and individual mentoring.

‘Theatre Sandbox’ will be a national scheme to support the production of six new experimental pieces of theatre/performance which utilise pervasive media technologies. Setting out to grow an active community of peer learning and development, the scheme will include a structured programme of commissioning, mentoring, work in progress performances, knowledge exchange and promotion.

Throughout her placement, Katie will be based at the Pervasive Media Studio, on the Harbourside in Bristol. A collaboration between Watershed, HP Labs and UWE, the Pervasive Media Studio is an open innovation space which brings together world-class artists, researchers and users from diverse backgrounds to explore the future of mobile and wireless media.

As well as being a professional development opportunity for Katie, the Board recognises that this placement will provide long-term benefits for the Company, with the organisational and personal leadership skills Katie gains this year feeding back into The Other Way Works in the future.

Her successful selection for this competitive scheme is an endorsement of her work for the Company to date, and we wish her the best of luck in her placement in the year to come.

The Other Way Works will continue to deliver projects throughout 2010, with greater support from the Company’s Board and Associate Artists. The first of these will be a series of participatory arts workshops run by founding member Katherine Maxwell-Cook in January. Working in partnership with St Martin’s Arts and funded by Birmingham City Council, the workshops will provide opportunities for migrants and refugees to share their personal stories in creative ways.

Joel Love (Chair)
On behalf of the Board of Directors of The Other Way Works:
Louisa Davies-Foley, Fiona Handscomb, Liz Jones, Joel Love, Andrew Tims, Chris Unitt
